Being cukey.

Don’t you hate when you are looking for something and you can’t find it?  It’s also like searching for someone’s name, and it’s on the tip of your tongue, but the only thing you can say when you see them in line at Yogurtland is an awkward, “hi there!”  The thing I’m looking for in particular is a recipe.  A specific recipe for a gluten-free, vegan chocolate torte thing which I have made exactly once about 5 years ago.  The cake is especially memorable because I made it for a dinner party following  a Butoh dance performance during which one of the performers actually spit on me.  Not on purpose, but still.  It’s kind of put me off Butoh ever since.

And then there’s the thing that you didn’t know you were looking for until you find it.  Like when you stumble across a post-it note from last summer with some scribbles on it for a cucumber gimlet.  Oh yeah!  Cucumber Gimlet!  I’ve missed you!

Cucumber Gimlet

Makes 2 really pretty and really tasty cocktails.

4 0z or so gin or vodka
juice of 2 limes
2 tablespoons sugar
1 cucumber peeled, seeded and chopped into chunks
handful of ice cubes

Dump everything into a blender and blend on high.  Taste and adjust sugar if necessary.  Gimlets can be made ahead of time and then kept in the refrigerator (but how you could wait that long is beyond me).  If that’s the case, omit the ice cubes until just before serving.
